I Am My Beloved And My Beloved Is Mine- Guest Blog by Lisa Pressman

Monday, August 19th, 2013

Live music plays an integral part in all Jewish ceremonies and holidays, and especially in the wedding ceremony. As in all wedding ceremonies of all religions and traditions, live music sets the stage for this joyous celebration!

The traditional music that accompanies a Jewish wedding is very beautiful and romantic. Throughout the ages there has been music in the Jewish religious ceremonies, beginning with the composition of the historic Psalms. Today’s Jewish wedding ceremonies begin with music for the bridal party and family members that will walk down the aisle. The song Erev Shel Shoshanim (meaning Evening Of Roses) is often chosen for this moment though it may also be performed for the bridal processional as well. A popular song throughout the Middle East and Europe, Erev Shel Shoshanim has a very haunting and stirring melody – a very dramatic announcement for the beginning of the ceremony. You can just feel the deserts winds when this song is performed!

The song most often chosen for the Jewish bridal processional is Dodi Li. Meaning “I am my beloved… my beloved is mine” from The Song of Songs by King Solomon whose poetic psalms continue to grace many wedding ceremonies, of all religions, to this day. Dodi Li follows Erev Shel Shoshanim with a similar chord structure and pulse to accompany the bride, together with her parents, to meet her awaiting groom. Rabbi Andrea Frank explains that Dodi Li  “is a romantic declaration between a husband and wife, their marriage blessed under the Chuppah on their wedding day. It is a representation for the love between the people of Israel and their Adonai (God)”.

For the recessional, the bride and groom usually pick one of two traditional songs: Chaussen Kalle, Mazel Tov or Simon Tov. Both songs are very vivacious and celebratory, offering hearty congratulations to the newly married couple. As soon as the groom “breaks the glass” and everyone shouts Mazel tov, the music begins!

A highlight of the Jewish wedding reception is the dancing of the Hora where everyone honors the bride and groom in a circle of love and happiness.  Many traditional Jewish songs are performed for the Hora offering multitudes of blessings with each spirited melody blending in to the next. After performing Chaussen Kalle, Mazel Tov or Simon Tov, popular songs such as Ose Shalom, Shalom Aleichem, Artsa Alinu, and of course, Hava Nagilah are performed in succession.

There are also many Jewish songs that are more serene, therefore more appropriate for the Prelude to the ceremony or background to the Blessings if desired. One of my favorite songs is Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold). This is an international favorite that has been performed by many artists such as Ofra Haza and Sharon Isbin. There are also traditional waltzes (Eucalyptus Garden, Yi’Did Nefesh) that have enchanting melodies. As in every culture, there are countless joyous songs, easily performed by professional musicians on any instrument!
